Here are the chosen 15 places you must visit during your stay at Hidalgo Mexico:

Hidalgo,Mexico is popular for its natural wonders, like the breathtaking Las Grutas de Tolantongo hot springs, and for traditions like the brightly coloured celebrations, music, and dancing of the “Feria de la Candelaria,” which takes place in February.

Hidalgo’s rich pre Columbian past, which is evident in the numerous ancient pyramids and ruins marking the state the most popular of which is the ancient city of Tula which is also one of its main attractions.

Here are my top 15 activities in Hidalgo Mexico to help you enjoy your vacation and make sure you don’t miss anything amazing this state has to offer.

15 Best Spots in Hidalgo Mexico

15. Ancient Toltec City Ruins Of Tula

Tula, Mexico
Tula, Mexico

Tula Archaeological Site NEEDS to be on your travel list if you love heritage and archaeology.

Tula is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hidalgo Mexico, so even if you’re not, I still believe you must put this on your list of things to do in Hidalgo.
The enormous stone warriors known as the “Atlantes,” who guard the temple’s entry, are one of the most striking features of Tula, an ancient city that the Toltecs once called home.

The sculpted figures are now among the most popular representations of the Toltec civilization.

The chance of climbing to the very top of the main temple is one of the best parts of a trip to the Tula Archaeological Site.
The climb is a little hard but the views from up there in my opinion are well worth the effort.

14. Thermal Pools Of Las Grutas De Tolantongo

Las Grutas De Tolantongo, Hidalgo Mexico
Las Grutas De Tolantongo

If you want an exceptional and memorable experience, you have to visit Las Grutas de Tolantongo in Hidalgo Mexico. Tolantongo Hidalgo Mexico is an absolute favourite of mine.

The Tolantongo River created the hot springs, which are framed by beautiful rock formations and lush vegetation and offer the ideal getaway from the daily grind.

You will be astounded by the majesty of the surrounding towering formations of rocks and the sparkling clear thermal waters.
There are plenty of pools to pick from, varying in temperature from warm to hot, so there is going to be one that is perfect for you.

You can pass the time with plenty of other activities.
You can explore the neighbouring caves, hike alongside the river, and find hidden waterfalls. There’s even a zipline if you’re feeling bold.

A wonderful day can be completed by grabbing some food  at one of the many restaurants located on the property after a full afternoon and watching the sun go down beneath the mountains.

13. Volcanic Basalt Colums At Prismas Basalticos

Prismas Basalticos
Prismas Basalticos

Millions of years ago, eruptions from volcanoes created the amazing natural wonder of Prismas Basalticos in Huasca de Ocampos, which is an enjoyable and thrilling outdoor experience.

The range of activities available at Prismas Basalticos is excellent; you can explore by boat, horseback, or on foot.
After your fun filled morning or afternoon, stop by one of the local eateries for a bite to eat, to complete your adventurous day in one of my favourite spots in Hidalgo Mexico.

12. Hiking To Pena Del Cuervo

Pena del Cuervo
Pena del Cuervo

Pena del Cuervo hike is the ideal outdoor activity if you’re looking for something a little more challenging!
This gorgeous rock formation in the heart of the Sierra Gorda, which is sure to leave you feeling energised and with amazing views!

A medium to difficult trail that flows through the Sierra Gorda’s lush vegetation leads to Pena del Cuervo.
You’ll be greeted by amazing views as you move up the path, which spans from the gorgeous peaks of the Sierra Gorda to rolling hills dotted with cacti.

After the hike, cool off by taking a dip in the naturally occurring swimming pool at the base of the rock formation and admire its beauty.
The Centro de Visitantes Parque Nacional El Chico, Hgo, is where the walk begins.

11. Sandboarding At Las Dunas Rojas

Las Dunas Rojas
Las Dunas Rojas

This unique and stunning landscape was created by the wind and water eroding the dunes over tens of thousands of years.
The most amazing way to see the Las Dunas Rojas is to go up to the top of one of the dunes and enjoy the breathtaking views that await you there.

And the joy doesn’t end there. Enjoy the excitement of sandboarding, a local activity that involves sliding down the dunes on a board.
This is a view that you cannot miss while visiting Hidalgo Mexico.

10. Visit The Carnival

Don’t miss the carnival in Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo, if you’re searching for a lively and colourful event.
This yearly celebration honours the ancient Mexican holiday of the Candelaria and takes place during the first week of February.

The town comes alive with energy and joy during Carnival, when people gather to feast, perform and sing.
The “Los Chinelos” march is one of the carnival’s best bits.
People dress in vibrant outfits, masks, and headpieces, and they dance cheerfully on the streets.

The lavish outfits and exciting performance will captivate you with their visual spectacle.
If you enjoy partying and typical Mexican culture, you should definitely check out Tenango de Doria’s carnival.

9. Visit Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque

Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque
Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque

Originally built in the sixteenth century, this amazing construction was intended to supply water to the neighbouring town of Huejutla.
The entire waterway network is more than thirty miles (48 km) long.

The waterway is a magnificent sight, a powerful representation of the fortitude and tenacity of those who built it, and an important reminder of the amazing things that are possible when people apply their creativity and willpower.

8. Visit Pachuca Hidalgo’s Capital

Pachuca Hidalgo
Pachuca Hidalgo

A trip to Pachuca, the state’s capital, is a must see when visiting Hidalgo Mexico.
Pachuca offers something for every person, whether you’re searching for adventure, history, or just an enjoyable time.

When visiting Pachuca, you must make sure to climb to the top of the Torre del Reloj.
One of the most widely known symbols in the city is this clock tower, and climbing to the top offers amazing views of the city and the rural surroundings.

Tacos, tamales, pozole, and carnitas are just a few of the mouthwatering street foods that Pachuca is famous for.

7. Visit Pahnu Archeological Site

Pahnu Archeological Site

Discovering the remote city of Pahnu, which was formerly inhabited by the Otomi people, is an exciting adventure because it’s a somewhat undiscovered location.

Pyramids, plazas, and temples that have been preserved at the site each tell a unique tale about the Otomi people and their rich heritage.

The chance to go up one of the pyramids and be presented with incredible views of the landscape below is one of the best parts of a trip to the Pahnu Archaeological Site.
I personally enjoy these old ruins and this has to be one of the oldest sites to exist in Hidalgo Mexico.

6. Enjoy Water Sports At Zimapan Dam

Zimapan Dam
Zimapan Dam

The Zimapan Dam, a gorgeous man made lake in the centre of Hidalgo, provides a refreshing escape from the hectic city life.

There is an activity for everybody at Zimapan Dam, whether you want to take a boat ride, go fishing, or just unwind on the beach.

It’s a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
You can find a shaded area to have a picnic with friends and family or just relax on the white sand beaches.
Zimapan Dam is located in Hidalgo on Parque Miguel Hidalgo Road.

5. Go Rock Climbing In Hell’s Canyon

Prepare yourself for an unbeatable adventure.
Enjoy the magnificent canyon of Canon del Infiernillo, in which you can stare upon enormous rock formations!

A number of natural pools and waterfalls can be found throughout Canon del Infiernillo, which are ideal for a cool dip.
Try rock climbing and rappelling if you’re adventurous enough to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of the cliffs.

4. Visit The Magical Town Of Tecozautla

Tecozautla
Tecozautla

You have to go to the unique town of Tecozautla if you’re searching for a fantastical experience in Hidalgo!
The gorgeous and adorable town of Tecozautla is filled with surprises!

Its antique streets, colonial style houses, and stunning natural setting are sure to charm you in no time!
Walking around Tecozautla’s main square, which is the ideal spot to take in the local ambience, is one of the highlights of a visit.

One of the oldest structures in Tecozautla is the historical church, which you should definitely see while you’re there. It was built in the sixteenth century! It is a stunning illustration of colonial-style building design.

Visit the neighbouring Cueva del Diablo, a breathtaking natural cave with fascinating rock formations just just a few miles away, if you’re looking for an adventure in the outdoors.

3. Visit The Trade Town Of Huichapan

Huichapan
Huichapan

Mule drivers who travelled the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro with loads of cargo and passengers once gathered in magical Huichapan.

A reminder to the town’s rich past is the fact that Julian Villagran, who was instrumental in Mexico’s independence, is renowned for having been born there.
For those who are interested in Mexican history and culture, Huichapan’s colonial-era religious architecture, which features magnificent limestone churches with baroque decorations, is a must-see.

Make sure to visit the Parroquia de San Mateo, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, and Capilla de la Tercera Orden churches.
These exquisite buildings will undoubtedly offer a memorable experience and are a tribute to Huichapan’s rich cultural and religious legacy.

2. Visit Huejutla in Hidalgo, Mexico

Huejutla Hidalgo
Huejutla Hidalgo

Huejutla is a town which is an undiscovered gem that awaits to be found.
This town, which is in the centre of Hidalgo, is a true representation of Mexican history, culture, and customs.

If you want to experience real Mexican culture, this is the place to go.

The magnificent colonial architecture found in Huejutla’s structures, churches, and residences is popular with tourists.
Parroquia de San Juan Bautista, the town’s main church, is a superb illustration of religious architecture from the colonial era.

A variety of adventure activities are available in Huejutla, including hiking and exploring the neighbouring caves and waterfalls.

Constructed in the 18th century, this stunning farm was once a prosperous sugar plantation that provides tourists with a fun and educational experience while showcasing the magnificence of Mexican colonial life.

The beautifully preserved interiors of the hacienda, with its grand halls, dining rooms, and bedrooms, each housing a variety of antiques and decorations from past centuries, are open to visitors.

A luxurious all inclusive resort for adults only, Sandals Antigua lies on the edge of Dickenson Bay, the most popular beach in Antigua.
Located on a breathtaking 27 acre property, the resort include 373 rooms and is separated into two distinct areas: the Mediterranean Beachfront Village and the Caribbean Beachside Village.
Sandals Antigua is the ideal getaway destination for couples, having been voted the “world’s most romantic resort.” The 27 acres of lush tropical landscaping that surround Sandals Antigua are home to a gorgeous beach, elegant suites, and a variety of related activities.

Arriving at Sandals Grande Antigua

You will fly into VC Bird International Airport to get to Sandals Grande Antigua for your honeymoon or couples getaway.
To start your vacation as soon as possible, you check in at the Sandals desk at the airport. After that, you can take advantage of a free 15-minute shuttle ride to the resort.
The resort is only ten minutes from St. John’s, the capital of Antigua, and only a short 15 minutes’ drive from the V. C. Bird International Airport. We left Toronto for Antigua in just four hours, so we didn’t waste any time and right away began to enjoy our getaway at Sandals Grande Antigua.

Sandals Antigua Rooms and Suites

sandals grande antigua rooms

Whichever Sandals Antigua Room you select, your trip will be delightful. You might be asking yourself, “Why would I spend money on an upgraded room when I’m going to be at the beach all day .” You might be surprised to learn that a room upgrade involves a lot more. Well…

  • YOU HAVE YOUR OWN BACKYARD
  • MARBLE BATHROOM
  • BUTLER ELITE SERVICE
  • CELLPHONE FOR REQUESTS
  • ALL THE FOOD YOU LIKE

We stayed in a Mediterranean Oceanview Penthouse with a One Bedroom Butler Suite, which included a living room and bedroom that were separate and had amazing views of the resort.
A range of rooms and suites are available at Sandals Antigua, found in beachside villages in the Caribbean or Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Villa with Private Pool Sanctuary is a fantastic getaway for honeymooners. It features a separate living area, a bathroom with a Roman whirlpool tub and a walk-in rain shower, with water views from the private garden with a pool.
There is a personal butler available at this villa.
There’s no shortage of other options for suites and rooms with garden, ocean, or beach views, and with or without butler service.

Sandals Antigua Restaurants

Sandals Grande Antigua restaurants

There are 11 restaurants and 7 bars at Sandals Antigua, offering a variety of cuisines including Japanese,French, British, American, Italian, and even Tex Mex. We definitely found some favourites after a week here, among the eateries, buffets, and sweets.

  • You won’t regret coming to Coco Café early for some freshly made chocolate chip cookies before they disappear.
  • For the tastiest breakfast and lunch buffets, visit Mario’s Italian restaurant. The Mexican, Asian, and Italian buffets were excellent, with daily themes changing. There was always fresh fruit, bread, pastries, and most importantly, bacon, at the breakfast buffets. among plenty of other things that were ever-changing.
  • Savour the Ok Corral Tex Mex kitchen’s fine Mexican cuisine while taking in the view. From wherever you sit, take in views of the chefs and your surroundings. You can watch them cook from the comfort of your table because all the tables are arranged around the kitchen.
  • Enjoy freshly made sushi in a cosy setting at Soy Sushi Bar. With its more intimate setting and more private Japanese cuisine, it’s a great substitute for Kimono’s Teppanyaki table. Experience unlimited servings of premium, freshly made sushi in a stylish setting. You can watch the chefs prepare your food up close at the high table seating.
  • Get something tasty for lunch at Doggies Hot Dog Stand, open from noon to 3 p.m. The ultimate All-American (or Canadian) treat is a Margarita pizza from Bella Napoli. Here, you can also personalise your wood-fired pizzas, so be artistic.

Sandals Antigua Drink Review

sandals antigua bars

The Sandal Grande Antigua includes seven bars, including a tiki bar and a swim-up bar.
There are swim up bars at two of the pools, which makes getting a drink really simple.
You can indulge to the fullest because, like at every Sandals resort, all meals, snacks, and drinks are included in the price of your stay! Also included is room service.

What to Do at Sandals Antigua

sandals antigua stingrays

There are plenty of things to do while visiting Sandals Antigua. Relax on the nearly two-mile stretch of powder-soft white sand while swimming in the stunning Dickenson Bay’s turquoise waters.

At Sandals Antigua, the calm waters are ideal for water sports. Free water sports offered include windsurfing, snorkelling, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, and Hobie Cat sailing. It even includes professional instruction in watersports (scuba diving excluded).
If you’d rather stay on land, there’s yoga classes, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, basketball, tennis (day and night), table tennis, croquet, and beach volleyball.
Take a dip in one of the six pools or four whirlpools, pamper yourself at the spa, or explore the lovely grounds, which are filled with secluded, romantic areas.
Theme nights, talent shows, dance classes, chocolate parties, karaoke, a piano bar, beach parties and live music are just a few of the daily and evening entertainment options. Sandals Antigua is ideally situated for gorgeous sunsets over Dickenson Bay, so be sure to catch it.

Sandals Antigua Excursions

sandals antigua excursions

We had the opportunity to leave the resort twice while we were there, and we absolutely loved it.
Joining a cooking class at Nicole’s Table was the high point. We made some delicious food there, and it took a little over fifteen minutes to get to from the resort.
As we prepared the main dish, Abby’s West Indian Curry, Dhal Puri Roti, Roasted Pumpkin, and Spinach Cooked in Coconut Milk, we began by making Nicole’s Old Fashioned Rum Punch and Coconut Crisps to munch on.
The curry went perfectly with the roti, which was delicious. We were quite full after the rum tasting because the island cuisine is so heavy.
We also visited Sheer Rocks, a restaurant with reserved swimming areas.
Visiting Stingray City to see the stingrays was a wonderful choice that we planned to try but we were short of time.

Sandals Antigua SPA

sandals antigua spa

Give yourself a treat by having your butler schedule a visit to the Red Lane Spa. I had a private 60 minute Neroli Jasmine Candle Massage, which included a massage oil candle to take home. These oil candles are a wonderful way to carry the spa experience home, and I love souvenirs. With tasteful changing and waiting areas, personalised scents, and calm mood lighting, the staff makes sure that guests have a pleasant experience.
You can use the trendy outdoor water therapies in addition to your treatment reservation. To guarantee some privacy, schedule an appointment with the spa in advance.

Your butler can arrange for your return transport, luggage pickup, and an escort to the check-out lounge ahead of your departure. And until your next visit, pick up some Sandals Resorts souvenirs from the gift shop to remember your trips. We had such amazing times here, and we hope our review of the Sandals Grande Antigua was helpful in providing some advice.
